Spirituality
Counselors explore many areas of a client’s life yet often do not inquire about the spiritual aspects, assuming that spirituality may be beyond the scope of counseling. Religious beliefs and spirituality are powerful sources for establishing morals, ethics, values and identity. The meaning of life is often predicated by spiritual beliefs. Core beliefs are often constructed by spiritual orientation, and thus it is beneficial to explore such beliefs.
Exploring these beliefs, values and ethics is a valuable therapeutic integration tool enhancing the overall counseling process. The field of counseling has been slow in embracing spiritual and religious philosophies. There is now strong evidence for the significance of spirituality in both evaluation and treatment results. |
